Mr. Miller noted the survey comments about the paving of Washington Road, and |
stated he was appalled that those residents left a City Council meeting thinking things |
would stay the same. He felt that lead to other responses on the surveys about saving |
the trees. He recalled Time Magazine had an article about large trees and a |
movement across the nation to preserve large trees because every large tree lost had a |
significant impact on the environment in terms of filtration, evaporation, cooling, etc., |
that no amount of smaller trees could compensate for. He stated those trees were |
being declared and protected as historic resources. He thought some historic districts |
could be adversely impacted by large road improvement projects, along with sewer |
and water and curb and gutter plans. He did not recall any conversation at the HDC |
Level about the plan to pave Washington Road. He thought it would help the |
Commission to be more engaged with things going on in the districts. He agreed the |
historic feel would be lost if Washington Road was paved, and the trees would be |
lost. He commented he had not seen the road expansion plans. |
