Discussion regarding Road Millage
The Committee members discussed the "uphill battle fight" for the Road Millage update |
noting the following: |
* A successful town hall meeting was held with 12 - 15 residents in attendance asking a |
lot of good questions. |
* Misinformation against the Road Millage includes the following: |
* Detroit News editorial which stated "...you are masking a problem by asking for a |
dedicated millage, you should actually revamp your charter..." |
* Candidates who did not support the Road Millage created seeds of doubt among |
the voters. |
* Road Millage Committee members were not qualified with the right background to |
educate voters. |
* Vote "yes" signs were constantly removed and stolen. |
* Alternative solutions being proposed have no basis. |
Mr. Barnett requested Committee members to write letters to the editors of the Eccentric |
and Oakland Press explaining why they support the Road Millage. |
Ms. Holder read her letter to the Committee as follows: |
"In response to the Headlines in the October 27th edition regarding the Road Millage for |
Rochester Hills, I hope the candidates who are against the Road Millage are prepared to |
pony up to a solution come November if this much needed Millage fails. I have been on |
the Council for six years and I can absolutely say that there are no hidden funds. The |
Budget that the residents see is the actual Budget we work with - no hide and seek |
games are being played. The Road Funding problem was announced to the public, not |
sugar coated or over inflated. The problem is exactly as presented. As for splitting the |
problem into two ballot questions, why make one problem into two and still have the |
same problem year after year. I ask the candidates, please explain why the city is not |
coming back or where we are not spending our resources responsibly. I do not think |
you have answers. I asked one candidate how he would solve the road funding issue |
and he said we need to go for coffee. I do not downplay the serious issue to the level of |
a casual coffee encounter. I think most of my fellow residents can look through the fog |
and see the lighthouse. Barbara Holder. |
