Chairperson Carvey called the Green Space Advisory Board meeting to order ‎

GSAB Administrative & Strategic Sub‎-‎Committee‎

Chairperson Carvey gave a brief update regarding an effort being made by ‎

Mayor Barnett to discuss the acquisition of a ‎50 ‎acre parcel, known as the ‎

White Family property, located north of the Clinton River and across from River ‎

Bend Park in Rochester Hills‎. ‎Currently there is a very large difference between ‎

the appraised value and the seller's asking price‎.‎

GSAB Communication, Promotion & Education Sub‎-‎Committee‎

Recap of the Second Annual Green Space Discovery Hike held Saturday, ‎

May ‎19‎, ‎2012‎

Member Tilove provided feedback on the Discovery Hike and thanked various ‎

people for their assistance‎. ‎The weather was great‎. ‎Approximately ‎70 ‎hikers ‎

came out for the event‎. ‎Eight ‎(‎8‎) ‎nice raffle prizes were awarded and delivered ‎

or mailed‎. ‎There were fewer hikers than in ‎2011 ‎which may be due to the ‎

following‎:‎

* ‎Last year's hike was held in April versus May‎. ‎Perhaps the start time should ‎

be earlier‎.‎

* ‎School e‎-‎mail reminders went out early in the year and no reminders were ‎

sent out‎.‎

* ‎Sport team practices and activities are fully engaged in May‎.‎

* ‎There are many competing events in May and the press release seemed ‎

boring‎.‎

* ‎Perhaps the raffle cards should go back to being punched at each station‎.‎

* ‎The hike event may have served its purpose and it should be determined if it ‎

is worthwhile doing again‎.‎

The Board thanked Member Tilove and her steering committee for a fine job‎.‎

Vice Chairperson Gauthier distributed an updated log he maintains regarding all ‎

the property nominations and acquisitions for green space‎.‎

Mr‎. ‎Mike Hartner, Director of Parks & Forestry, gave a presentation which ‎

included the following‎:‎

* ‎A review of the development of the Greenways Opportunity Plan which ‎

looked at water resources, history, natural areas and recreation along the ‎

Clinton River corridor‎. ‎

* ‎A review of the ‎2005 ‎Natural Features Inventory which helped to identify ‎

possible properties that might be saved as green space‎. ‎

* ‎Mr‎. ‎Kurt Dawson, Assessor‎/‎Treasurer, provided an update on the Green ‎

Space Millage Fund‎. ‎The fund balance is $‎5‎,‎097‎,‎503 ‎as of May ‎31‎, ‎2012‎. ‎

Approximately $‎2‎,‎500‎,‎000 ‎will be collected during the remaining three ‎(‎3‎) ‎years ‎

left in the millage which will expire at the end of ‎2015‎.‎

* ‎A review of the nomination, criteria scoring and evaluation process that was ‎

developed by GSAB in ‎2006‎.‎

Mr‎. ‎Hartner also provided maps and scoring information on the previously ‎

evaluated parcels and reviewed each property‎. ‎After discussion, the Board ‎

consensus was to revisit three ‎(‎3‎) ‎parcels‎: ‎Adams Road, Clinton River valley ‎

1‎, and Rochdale West and East‎. ‎Mr‎. ‎Hartner will seek permission from the ‎

parcel owners to allow GSAB to walk each parcel‎. ‎He will also determine the ‎

availability of Naturalist Lance DeVoe to guide the walks on Tuesday, July ‎31 ‎at ‎

6 ‎p‎.‎m‎. ‎with an alternate date of Tuesday, August ‎7 ‎at ‎6 ‎p‎.‎m‎. ‎Staff will post a ‎

special notice accordingly‎.‎

GSAB Stewardship & Advocacy Sub‎-‎Committee‎

No report at this time‎. ‎The sub‎-‎committee will discuss a fall stewardship project ‎

to address autumn olive and buckthorn which are invasive plants‎. ‎It was noted ‎

that the work projects are beneficial to developing a stewardship funding plan‎.‎

Certificates of appreciation were given to the children of Member Phillips for ‎

helping with the ‎2012 ‎spring stewardship project‎.‎
